A heartbreaking tragedy struck Zangon Kaya in Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area of Kano State, on Friday as four young men drowned in a waterway blocked due to ongoing railway construction.

Chain of Rescue Turns Fatal
What began as a casual swim quickly turned deadly. Two young men entered the water but were unable to escape. A third friend dived in to help but became trapped as well. Tragically, a fourth person who tried to rescue them also got caught in the same fate. The victims — Nasirudden Tasi’u (25), Bashir Sani (28), Yakubu Muhd (22), and Usman Ubale (26) — were all found unconscious and later declared dead.

Delayed Rescue Effort and Recovery
According to the Kano State Fire Service, two of the victims were pulled out by residents before emergency responders arrived. The fire service team recovered the remaining two bodies shortly after. The blocked waterway, filled due to railway construction runoff, proved to be a death trap.

Authorities Issue Fresh Warning
Public Relations Officer of the fire service, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, confirmed the incident and issued a stern warning to residents: “Avoid swimming in unsafe, unfamiliar areas, especially those near construction zones.”

Ongoing Investigations
The bodies have been handed over to the police for further investigation as authorities look into safety oversights surrounding the construction site and the circumstances that led to the fatal incident.
