A Lasting Honor for a Former Leader
President Bola Tinubu has announced the renaming of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) to Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri, in honor of Nigeria’s late former president. The decision was made during a special Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held to pay tribute to Buhari, who passed away at 82 after a prolonged illness.
From UNIMAID to Muhammadu Buhari University
Established in 1975, the University of Maiduguri is one of Nigeria’s key second-generation universities. The renaming requires an amendment to the institution’s establishment Act by the National Assembly. The move immortalizes Buhari’s contributions as both a military leader (1984–1985) and a two-term democratically elected president (2015–2023).

A Legacy Etched in Education
Originally founded under the Third National Development Plan, UNIMAID began with just three faculties and 743 students. Today, it boasts 12 faculties, a College of Medical Sciences, and a Postgraduate School. The renaming ensures Buhari’s legacy endures in Nigeria’s academic landscape.
A Fitting Farewell
The decision follows Buhari’s well-attended funeral in Daura, Katsina, where dignitaries gathered to bid farewell to the elder statesman. By renaming the institution, Tinubu not only honors Buhari’s service but also reinforces the connection between leadership, education, and national progress.
