Bail Granted, But Political Battle Just Begins
Former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai made a notable appearance at a Karu Magistrate Court on Friday, standing by five Social Democratic Party (SDP) officials arrested over a disputed National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting. The defendants—including the party’s FCT chairman, national youth leader, and legal adviser—were granted N2 million bail each after four days in Keffi Correctional Centre.
Magistrate Ahmad Bala Ndajowa ruled the charges—criminal trespass, theft, incitement, and mischief—were bailable, stressing the presumption of innocence. But defence lawyer Ubong Akpan called the case a “sham,” alleging police acted without evidence.

The Heart of the Dispute: A Power Struggle?
The crisis stems from a NEC meeting at SDP’s Abuja secretariat, which police claim was unauthorized. However, Nurudeen Bissallah (FCT SDP chairman) insisted they secured police approval:
“We followed due process. Thirteen officers were deployed to secure the venue. This arrest is about silencing dissent.”
Observers suggest the fracas reflects deeper factional rivalries as the SDP positions itself for 2027 elections. Bissallah vowed the case won’t derail the party’s plans, declaring: “This is the first battle in a long war.”
El-Rufai’s Presence: A Political Signal?
While El-Rufai didn’t speak in court, his appearance fuels speculation about his post-APC ambitions. Having recently engaged with opposition figures, his alignment with SDP leaders raises questions about potential realignments ahead of 2027.

With the case adjourned for hearing, legal experts say the prosecution faces hurdles proving intent. Meanwhile, the SDP faction has doubled down, pledging to challenge the charges and reclaim control of the party’s leadership.
