Former Kogi West senator and 2023 governorship candidate Dino Melaye has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), declaring his loss of confidence in the party’s ability to provide effective leadership for Nigeria.
In a resignation letter addressed to the PDP chairman of Ward 1, Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area, and shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday, Melaye announced his immediate withdrawal from all party activities. The letter, dated July 4, 2025, described his decision as necessary due to the PDP’s “lack of potency and capacity” to rescue Nigeria from its political and governance challenges.

“Having carefully reflected on the state of the party, I can no longer, in good conscience, participate in its activities or lend my support to her agenda,” Melaye stated. He emphasized that his resignation should be treated as a complete disengagement from the party at all levels.
Melaye, known for his vocal opposition politics, had previously contested the 2023 Kogi State governorship election under the PDP but lost to the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate. His departure adds to the growing list of high-profile exits from the opposition party, which has struggled to maintain cohesion since its defeat in the 2023 general elections.
In his closing remarks, Melaye expressed appreciation for the opportunities he had under the PDP but maintained that the party no longer aligns with his political vision.
“Thank you for the opportunity to serve under the platform during my period of membership,” he wrote.
Political analysts speculate that Melaye may be considering a switch to another party ahead of future elections, though he has not yet announced his next move. His resignation comes at a time when opposition parties are regrouping to challenge the ruling APC in the 2027 electoral cycle.
The PDP has yet to issue an official response to Melaye’s resignation.
