The Nigerian Army, working with the Nigerian Air Force, rescued Amina Abubakar, widow of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, on Monday, June 15, 2026, two days after her husband died in bandit captivity in Katsina State, even as conflicting accounts continue to surround both his death and the recovery of his body.
The Defence Headquarters confirmed the rescue, saying troops of Operation FASAN YAMMA carried out intensified search and rescue efforts that led to Amina’s recovery. Director of Defence Information Samaila Uba described her husband’s death as a tragic loss for the country. The couple had been abducted together on May 30 along the Marabar Musawa-Kafinsoli road in Matazu Local Government Area while travelling to a wedding.
However, the rescue has not settled lingering questions about the circumstances of General Abubakar’s death. The Katsina State Government said he died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension, but his son Isyaka Rabe Abubakar disputed that account, telling DW Hausa Service that his father had no history of either condition. ‘Many people saw the announcement that the funeral prayer would be held at six o’clock,’ Isyaka said, adding that the family was never told how the body was recovered from the kidnappers.
Conflicting Accounts Deepen Controversy
A security source separately told Premium Times that the official account of how the body was retrieved contradicted other information gathered during the operation, deepening public confusion about the sequence of events. Former Kogi West Senator Dino Melaye claimed on social media that heavily armed bandits personally handed over the general’s body in Katsina before retreating into a nearby forest, though he did not disclose his source.
Furthermore, TheCable’s fact-checking unit debunked a viral image purporting to show the handover of the body, confirming it was an AI-generated photograph carrying Hausa-language inscriptions falsely describing the alleged handover. The fabricated image had circulated widely before being identified as fake, adding another layer of misinformation to an already confusing story.
Isyaka also firmly rejected reports that his mother had been released before the Army’s confirmed rescue operation, saying such claims were false and that she remained in captivity until troops physically recovered her. He appealed to the Katsina State Government to intensify efforts to ensure his mother received proper medical and psychological support. Still, he said the family had accepted his father’s death as God’s will, describing him as a martyr. Notably, security analyst Bukarti described the entire episode, from the kidnapping of a retired general to his death and the unclear circumstances of recovery, as evidence of the audacity bandits now display toward the Nigerian state. Consequently, the case has become a flashpoint for renewed criticism of government transparency on security matters.
Punch Editorial Demands Government Accountability
In an editorial published Wednesday, Punch newspaper said the Katsina State Government’s communication on the case had generated almost as many questions as it answered, warning that rumours thrive where facts are incomplete. The newspaper called for openness and transparency from authorities. As a result, pressure is mounting on the Katsina State Government to provide a fuller and more consistent account of the events surrounding the general’s death and his wife’s rescue.
