Osasere Okundaye has been confirmed as Nigeria’s youngest chartered accountant, having begun her journey with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria at the age of 13 after finishing secondary school early. The 19-year-old shared her story during the Power Must Change Hands monthly programme at the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries headquarters in Magboro, Lagos, describing a path that combined exceptional academic ability with discipline, faith, and the support of her family.
A Journey That Began Early
Okundaye completed secondary school ahead of her peers, which gave her the opportunity to begin pursuing the ICAN professional qualification much earlier than the vast majority of candidates. The ICAN examinations are widely regarded as among the most rigorous professional certifications in Nigeria, with pass rates that test even fully employed adult professionals.
Beginning the process at 13 required not just academic ability but extraordinary maturity, focus, and perseverance across a multi-year qualification journey. Okundaye navigated that journey while her peers were still in secondary school, emerging with a professional certification that many working adults spend years attempting to achieve.
What This Means for Nigerian Youth
Stories like Okundaye’s carry particular significance in Nigeria’s current social climate, where conversations about youth potential often focus on the challenges of unemployment, emigration, and limited opportunity. Her achievement demonstrates that, with the right environment, early support, and personal determination, extraordinary outcomes are possible for Nigerian young people even within existing systems.
Furthermore, her story arrives at a time when the government is investing in youth skills programmes including the AI National Skills Initiative and the iDICE Startup Bridge. Okundaye’s journey, while driven by her own determination, reflects the broader potential that exists when Nigerian young people are given structure, challenge, and appropriate support.
A Record Worth Celebrating
Records in professional achievement do not attract the same social media fanfare as athletic or entertainment milestones in Nigeria. However, they matter just as much, if not more, for the long-term development of the country’s professional and economic foundations.
Osasere Okundaye is 19. She is a chartered accountant. She began this journey at 13. In a country that sometimes struggles to celebrate its quiet achievers, her story deserves every moment of recognition it receives.
