AKURE — The Ondo State Security Network Agency, codenamed Amotekun, has rescued a kidnap victim and arrested a father and his three sons in Oba-Ile Akoko, in the Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State. Gistmania confirmed the operation, quoting Amotekun Corps Commander Adetunji Adeleye who made the disclosure while parading 28 suspects.
Adeleye said the operation was intelligence-led and involved coordination between Amotekun operatives and community information networks in the Akoko area. He said the arrested father and his three adult sons are suspected of running a kidnapping cell that has been responsible for multiple abductions in the community over recent months.
The rescued victim was found in a location linked to the family network and was in a state of distress when operatives arrived. The individual has been taken to a medical facility for assessment and is receiving support from state welfare officers. Police have been briefed and will coordinate the formal prosecution of the arrested suspects.
Amotekun’s Expanding Role
The Ondo operation reflects the growing operational capability of Amotekun in the southwest security architecture. Established in 2020 amid debates about the legality of state-sponsored security outfits, Amotekun has gradually built a track record of community-level intelligence gathering and rapid response operations that complement the work of federal security agencies.
Security analysts said the use of family-based kidnapping cells, where multiple relatives collaborate in abductions, is a pattern that community intelligence networks are particularly well-positioned to detect because local informants can identify suspicious family-level activity that external agencies might miss.
A Broader Security Picture
The Amotekun operation comes as the State Police Bill moves toward ratification in state assemblies, making Ondo one of many states that will soon need to decide how to integrate existing security outfits like Amotekun into the new decentralised policing framework. Security governance experts said the existing experience of outfits like Amotekun will be valuable in designing the new state police system.
