The last assignment before the World Cup begins. Nigeria gets Portugal. And nobody is taking this lightly.

The Super Eagles face Portugal on Wednesday, June 10, at the Estadio Dr. Magalhaes Pessoa in Leiria — the final tune-up game for both nations before the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off on June 11.

Missing the World Cup for the second time in a row has been painful for Nigerian football. However, the Super Eagles have not wallowed. Coach Eric Chelle has used the June window to test players, build combinations, and restore some national pride.

Nigeria drew 2-2 with Poland in Warsaw last week. The Eagles led twice and played with genuine quality. Still, a late Polish goal denied them what would have been a deserved win. Furthermore, defender Igoh Ogbu faces a scan today to determine the extent of a knock picked up in that match — potentially ruling him out of Wednesday’s fixture.

Portugal, meanwhile, have plenty of motivation of their own. They open their World Cup campaign against DR Congo on June 17 — the very nation that ended Nigeria’s World Cup dream in the CAF playoff final. Consequently, Wednesday’s match carries an extra layer of emotion for Nigerian fans.

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler has spoken highly of Nigerian youngster Zadok Yohanna this week. His words reflect a wider sense that Nigerian talent continues to impress at the highest levels. However, on Wednesday, the Eagles must deliver as a team, not just as individuals.

What a Good Result Would Mean

A win or an impressive performance against Portugal would send a strong message. It would say that the Super Eagles are not just preparing — they are improving. Moreover, it would give Nigerians something to be genuinely proud of heading into a World Cup they are not part of.

Kick-off is set for Wednesday afternoon in Leiria. Nigeria will not be in the tournament. But they will arrive at that stadium with everything still to prove.
