LONDON — Nigeria and other African leaders are actively promoting investment opportunities at the London Stock Exchange as part of a coordinated effort to deepen economic ties with the United Kingdom. Punch Newspapers confirmed the forum on Wednesday. The event brought together African heads of government, business leaders, and UK investors.

Nigeria’s delegation highlighted the country’s improved investment climate including the S&P credit rating upgrade, foreign reserves crossing $50 billion, the T+1 stock market settlement launch, and the Dangote Refinery’s transformation of the energy sector. Officials said Nigeria offers some of the most attractive investment returns in emerging markets.

The London Stock Exchange forum is part of a broader Nigerian strategy of using international platforms to project an improved economic image. Earlier in May, eight Nigerian startups pitched at the Africa Tech Summit London. The government is running complementary tracks of diplomatic and commercial engagement with the UK.

UK-Nigeria Economic Relations

The United Kingdom is one of Nigeria’s largest trading partners and a significant source of foreign direct investment. The post-Brexit UK is actively seeking to deepen trade and investment relationships with African nations as it builds an independent trade policy.

Nigeria’s large diaspora in the UK, estimated at over one million people, is another dimension of the bilateral relationship. Remittances from the Nigerian community in the UK contribute significantly to Nigeria’s diaspora inflows. Several prominent British-Nigerian entrepreneurs and investors are also active in Nigerian business.

Investment analysts said the London forum is an opportunity but its real value depends on follow-through. Nigeria has attracted investment interest at international forums many times before. What converts interest into actual capital flows is a consistent improvement in the domestic business environment, including faster regulatory approvals, better infrastructure, and greater legal certainty.
