TUSCALOOSA — Nigerian sprinting sensation Samuel Ogazi is in the final stages of preparation for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships following his world-leading 44.02 second performance in the 400 metres earlier this month. The 19-year-old University of Alabama star is targeting a sub-44 second performance at the championships in June.
Alabama Athletics confirmed on Wednesday that Ogazi continues to train well and remains on track for the championships. Head coach Dan Waters said the team is carefully managing the training load to ensure Ogazi peaks at exactly the right moment during the championship meet.
“Samuel is in a great place mentally and physically. The national record performance showed what he is capable of. The championship is where we want him to go even further. Everything we are doing right now is about producing his best performance at the biggest moment,” Waters said.
Ogazi’s 44.02 seconds shatters the previous Nigerian national record of 44.17 seconds set by the legendary Innocent Egbunike in 1987. The 39-year-old record had been considered almost untouchable. Ogazi’s performance places him among the top ten 400m runners in the world this season.
Sub-44 in Sight
The sub-44 second barrier in the 400 metres is the mark that separates elite sprinters from the truly exceptional. Only a small number of athletes in the history of the event have broken it. Wayde van Niekerk’s world record of 43.03 seconds, set at the 2016 Rio Olympics, represents the outer limit of human achievement in the event.
Athletics analysts said Ogazi’s 44.02 suggests he has the mechanics, conditioning, and competitive temperament to go sub-44. His stride pattern, race distribution, and finishing speed in the earlier performance all showed room for improvement if he can execute perfectly on championship day.
Furthermore, Ogazi is the defending NCAA 400m champion. Retaining the title with a sub-44 performance would cement his status as one of the most exciting young track and field athletes in the world. Several major international athletic meetings have already expressed interest in featuring him after the NCAA season.
Nigeria Watching Proudly
Back in Nigeria, Ogazi’s performances continue to generate enormous pride and discussion. The Athletics Federation of Nigeria said it is in active dialogue with his management about his international calendar, particularly for the World Athletics Championships later in 2026.
His story, from Kaduna to the University of Alabama to a world-leading performance, resonates with Nigerian youth who see his success as proof that talent, hard work, and opportunity can produce extraordinary results. Several athletic programs across Nigeria have reported increased youth interest in the 400m event since Ogazi’s record.
Ogazi himself has remained focused and grounded in media interactions. He consistently credits his coaches, teammates, and the support he has received from Nigeria as the foundation of his success. His combination of exceptional athletic ability and personal humility has made him one of the most admired Nigerian athletes of his generation.
