Sowore Declares 2027 Presidential Bid Under African Action Congress

ABUJA — Human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election under the African Action Congress. The declaration was confirmed in a statement released on Sunday and has generated significant discussion across Nigerian political and social media circles.

Sowore ran for president under the AAC in both 2019 and 2023. His 2027 declaration makes him one of the first opposition figures to formally enter the race following Tinubu’s APC primary victory. He has consistently positioned himself as a radical alternative to what he describes as the recycled political class that has governed Nigeria since 1999.

“Nigeria does not need another politician from the same pool that has been failing us for decades. It needs transformational leadership rooted in justice, accountability, and genuine service to the people. That is what I offer,” Sowore said in the statement.

Sowore has a significant following among young, urban, and progressive Nigerians who are frustrated with mainstream politics. His online platforms, particularly Sahara Reporters, have built him a profile as an aggressive critic of government corruption and elite impunity.

A Controversial Figure

Sowore is also one of Nigeria’s most arrested political activists. He was detained by the Department of State Services in 2019 after calling for a RevolutionNow protest. He has faced multiple legal battles with the federal government and has been accused of various offences, all of which he has denied.

His supporters see the legal battles as evidence that the government fears his advocacy. Critics say his combative approach makes him an effective critic but an unlikely governing figure. His previous presidential campaigns, while generating significant online enthusiasm, translated into modest electoral results at the ballot box.

Furthermore, Sowore’s AAC is a small party with limited national infrastructure. Building a competitive presidential campaign requires a network of party agents, campaign coordinators, and funding across all 36 states and the FCT. Whether he can build that infrastructure in the time available before 2027 remains an open question.

Crowded Field Gets More Crowded

Sowore’s entry adds another name to what is already Nigeria’s most crowded presidential field in recent memory. Tinubu is the APC candidate. Atiku, Amaechi, and Hayatu-Deen are in the ADC. Makinde has launched the Reset Nigeria Movement. Adebayo is the SDP candidate. Kwankwaso may return to NNPP. Peter Obi’s platform is still unclear.

Political analysts say the crowded field overwhelmingly benefits Tinubu. Every additional candidate on the opposition side fragments the anti-APC vote further. Unless several of these figures reach a unity agreement, the 2027 opposition will be even more divided than it was in 2023.

Sowore acknowledged the fragmentation challenge but said the answer is not for him to step aside. He said the only solution is to build a genuine movement that can win on its own merits. He said Nigerians are ready for real change if the right candidate carries the message.
