LAGOS — Enugu Rangers have been crowned Nigeria Premier Football League champions for the ninth time in the club’s history. The Flying Antelopes secured the title with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Ikorodu City at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos, on the final day of the 2025/2026 season.
Captain Chidiebere Nwobodo was the hero for Rangers, scoring both goals in a performance that will be remembered in the club’s storied history. Nwobodo opened the scoring in the 30th minute with a spectacular finish before adding his second from a rebound to put the result beyond doubt.
Rangers stormed Lagos with thousands of fans for the title-deciding fixture. The scenes at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena were electric, with the coal city contingent celebrating wildly after the final whistle. National Sports Commission Chairman Shehu Dikko and NPFL Director-General Bukola Olopade were both in attendance.
Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu dedicated the title to Rangers fans and the Enugu State Government, which has provided strong support for the club’s resurgence. He said the team showed exceptional character throughout a gruelling season that went down to the final day.
Remo Stars’ Shocking Fall
In the most stunning development of the final day, defending champions Remo Stars were relegated from the NPFL. The Ikenne-based club, which won the league title just last season, could only draw 1-1 with Bendel Insurance. Results elsewhere went against them and goal difference became the deciding factor.
Remo Stars finished level on 47 points with Kwara United but their inferior goal difference condemned them to the Nigeria National League. It is the first time in Nigerian football history that a club has been relegated in the season immediately following winning the championship.
The relegation is a devastating blow for owner Kunle Soname and the Remo Stars project that had become one of Nigerian football’s most celebrated success stories. The club had been praised for its modern approach to football development. Their return to the NNL will test how sustainable that model is outside the top flight.
Continental Places and Relegation Picture
Rangers will lead Nigeria in the CAF Champions League next season, joined by Rivers United who secured second place. The Confederation Cup places will be determined by the Federation Cup competition, which is still ongoing.
Joining Remo Stars in relegation are El-Kanemi Warriors, Bayelsa United, and Wikki Tourists. Their departures create spaces for four promoted clubs from the Nigeria National League to join the NPFL for the 2026/2027 season.
Guardiola’s Man City also ended their own era this weekend, with news of the coach’s departure creating an eerie parallel between English and Nigerian football on the same final day. In Enugu, fans are celebrating. In Ikenne, there is only mourning. That is the beauty and brutality of football.
