Super Eagles Boosted by Iwobi Return but Kayode Picks Another Nation

LONDON — The Super Eagles received mixed news on the player availability front this week. Alex Iwobi has been cleared to return to action at Fulham, providing a timely boost ahead of Nigeria’s June international friendlies. However, Brentford defender Michael Kayode has reportedly decided to represent another country, dealing a fresh blow to Nigeria’s player pool.

Iwobi made his return from a hamstring injury during Fulham’s Premier League match against Wolves on Sunday. Fulham drew 1-1. Manager Marco Silva confirmed the midfielder has resumed full training and is available for selection going forward.

The news is hugely positive for Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle. Iwobi is one of Nigeria’s most experienced midfielders. His ability to play multiple positions, press high, and distribute the ball under pressure makes him difficult to replace. His availability for the Poland and Portugal friendlies in June is now looking highly likely.

However, Kayode’s decision creates a gap in Nigeria’s defensive options. The Brentford right back was seen as a future Super Eagles asset. His decision to commit his international future elsewhere is part of a pattern of Nigeria-eligible players choosing alternative national teams in recent months.

Canada Takes Three More

Canada’s latest squad announcement dealt a further blow to Nigeria by selecting three Nigeria-eligible players for upcoming World Cup friendlies. The players chose Canada over Nigeria, continuing a trend that has seen multiple dual nationals opt for other national teams ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup has accelerated this trend. Players who hold dual nationality and are not yet committed to Nigeria naturally favour countries that will play at the tournament. Canada, the UK, and other nations have taken full advantage.

Furthermore, Troost-Ekong’s retirement from international football following the World Cup qualifying failure has left a leadership void in defence. Nigeria needs to identify and develop reliable central defenders who are fully committed to the Super Eagles for the AFCON 2027 campaign.

Osimhen’s Arm Injury

Victor Osimhen adds another layer of concern. The striker sustained a fractured arm in Galatasaray’s Champions League match against Liverpool. He was subsequently spotted in Lagos driving a luxury vehicle, but his availability for the June internationals depends entirely on how quickly the fracture heals.

Chelle is expected to name his squad for the June window within the next week. The selection will be closely watched given the combination of players missing, returning, and defecting. Werder Bremen has confirmed that their Nigerian striker will not be available for the June window due to club commitments.

Despite the challenges, the Falconets continue to provide positive news. Nigeria’s U20 women’s team is drawn into a tough but manageable Group C for the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Poland. They face Spain and China. Coach Olowookere said his squad is ready for the challenge.
