Lagos, Nigeria — Former Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi has called for the resignation of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) board, accusing it of poor management and failure to deliver meaningful progress in Nigerian football.

Mikel, who spoke during a media engagement in Lagos, said Nigerian football has suffered setbacks due to weak leadership and lack of accountability within the federation. He argued that the current board has failed to meet the expectations of players, fans, and stakeholders.

“The NFF board must go. Nigerian football deserves better leadership. We cannot continue with the same cycle of poor decisions and mismanagement,” Mikel stated.

The former Chelsea midfielder highlighted issues such as inadequate support for players, inconsistent coaching appointments, and poor planning for major tournaments. He stressed that these problems have contributed to Nigeria’s struggles on the international stage.

Mikel’s comments come at a time when the Super Eagles are facing criticism over recent performances, including missed opportunities in continental competitions. Fans and analysts have repeatedly questioned the federation’s ability to manage the team effectively.

Sports analysts say Mikel’s intervention reflects growing frustration among former players who believe Nigerian football has not lived up to its potential. They argue that reforms are urgently needed to restore confidence and ensure long-term development.

Civil society groups and football enthusiasts have also echoed Mikel’s call, urging the government and relevant authorities to push for accountability in sports administration. “We need transparency in how funds are used and how decisions are made. Nigerian football cannot thrive under weak governance,” one supporter said.

The NFF has yet to issue an official response to Mikel’s remarks, but insiders suggest the board may defend its record by pointing to ongoing youth development programmes and efforts to secure sponsorships.

Observers note that Mikel’s stature as one of Nigeria’s most successful footballers gives weight to his comments. His career achievements, including winning the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea and leading Nigeria to an Africa Cup of Nations title, make him a respected voice in the football community.

For many Nigerians, his call for change resonates with long-standing concerns about the state of football administration. The debate over the NFF’s leadership is expected to intensify as stakeholders push for reforms ahead of upcoming international fixtures.

As the conversation continues, Mikel’s demand for the board’s resignation has added pressure on the federation to address governance issues and chart a new course for Nigerian football.
